A DR. M.L. KING JR. MINI- SERMON for such a time as this

One possible Beginning/Alpha:

Philippians 4, verses 8 and 9, King James' Bible, One Possible Translation, More or Less Common and Considered Canonical

8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

9 Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.

ONE POSSIBLE MIDDLE

Vernon Nickerson ,

That was a REAL cake. It was for our Founders Day celebration here in Huntsville in December.

Vernon, I choose health these days more so than cake, although I indulge when the occasion calls and the quality demands!

Rob Drake Thanks for your reply. Now I have more cake questions. Why? Because as a virtual educator and award-winning microwave pecan pie baker, I have a professional and personal interest in collecting recipes that can WOW! my 18-to-24 year old target cohort. A powerful visual presentation acts as an entry point to Black history relevant to Black panhellenic organizations. This weekend, that "leads" directly to ML and Coretta Scott King.

So, what did the black icing and gold decorations taste like? Was it a yellow cake or white cake? Was it a carrot cake or red velvet? For me, for example, if the icing was black food coloring to a vanilla buttercream icing OR An almond fondant dyed black, it would pair best with white or yellow cake. The more robust flavor profiles of carrot cake or choclate-dyed-deep-red ( red velvet cake) would clash with an similar intense flavor for the black icing like anise ( black licorice's main flavor).

Note well the possible connection between race = color and desirable and nauseating flavor combinations. From there, its not a huge leap to prompt a robust discussion on contemporary views of how we might be associating color with things/ people/flavors, etc. we like/ find attractive/ like the taste of...well you get the idea. So many recipes...so letter time to find just the right combinations...👌🤟🖖👍🌈🖤💚🤍❤💙💜🤎💛🧡

Rob Drake Huntsville, Alabama! So, perhaps you've heard of Hartselle? The Nickerson and Bell families lived on one "main drag" in Hartselle. You could drive past all their homes and right into the next small town if you weren't paying attention. I also remember the Warrior River and Opelika too. Sweet Home, Alabama, to Sweet Home, CHICAGO, IL, the city of my birth. My mother's stories of her life as a Registered Nurse at Evanston Hospital after graduation from Tuskeegee Institute, and the fact that my parents were married in the predominantly Black Second Baptist Church of Evanston, IL home of Northwestern University, created the unbroken circle of life which would become the common touchstone between me and Dr. Jeffrey Sterling , your fraternity Brother and Surgeon General = my source of sane , practical preventive medicine and medical information during my second global pandemic. So, unlike many people of every color, Universal Precautions and Social Distancing made perfect logical sense to me-- and I was already a layperson who understood the essential life-saving practice of social distancing and self-quarantine. I consider it an amazing blessing that I, one two separate occasions, was blessed to provide housing and intentional Christian hospitality to two men , one white and one black, who sadly, after recovery and achieving healthy sober lifestyles, eventually succumbed to HIV/AIDS after years of "normal" life among what I humorously refer to as the "General Population". Note well how eerily similar 2 very different global pandemics were, and still are. For example, it has taken 35 years for the nation to lose 700,000 lives to HIV/AIDS; it only took 24 months to reach that same gruesome milestone for COVID-19. That singular historical comparison is all I have needed to motivate myself to constantly monitor, assess, and manage risk in the current environment. Sadly, and this is uniquely and peculiar to the USA, predjudice and race-based decision-making appear to be on track to "trump" civic collaboration, representative democries and herald a return, again, to a "Third Reconstruction". And yet, in the fog of too many wars, the BIPOC tribe remains "drunk with with the wine of the world, with too many(?) having forgotten their roots. And all this from a picture of a Black and Gold pop-up cake!🌈💯🌈💯🌈💯👍🖖🤟

One possible Ending/ Omega

8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

9 Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.
