First, my condolences on YOUR loss. Second, a question - Does your school and or teachers' union offer grief counseling and support to teachers and other staff in your classroom? In 2013, while serving as Director of Contracts and Quality Assurance for a Skid Row ( downtown Los Angeles, CA ) homeless services provider, one of our resident clients took their life. My agency brought in a licensed psychologist for clients and or staff. It was very helpful for me. Finally, based on my four years of teaching experience with 18-24 year olds in urban and rural settings, the fact that the friend of the deceased student was willing to share about his break-up with a girl friend means he has some level of trust with you. My wish for you is that you remain open to having conversation as you never really know when he may in the future want to talk about the loss of his friend. Best wishes for your ongoing work as a 21st Century post-pandemic classroom teacher! 👍🖖🙏☮️🌍🌎🌏☮️ - VernonNickersonSchoolcoach, Los Angeles County, CA
