"Popular" Can Be Educational and Enlightening, even when Factually Historically Incorrect = The Upshaws, a new Netflix sitcom

From the article: "And in third place is the Netflix sitcom about a Black working-class family in the Midwest, “The Upshaws.”

See, here’s the deal, no real Black working- class family with the drama that writers created in their febrile imaginations is laughing-on-purpose BECAUSE this show is a "real black family" anywhere in the United States. In fact, if any family can prove in a court of law that "The Upshaws" is their family story, they should sue the show for a piece of the profits and theft of intellectual property/ plagiarism.

Let me take this opportunity to launch a boycott of "The Upshaws" until the real-life family alleging copyright infringement is formally hired as consultants and placed in the writers' room with final approval on all scripts. Or, they could just pay Mike Epps and Wanda Sykes extra, promote them to Co- Lead Writers, and mandate they consult with what ever unimaginable" composite" families this situation comedy was based upon.

Netflix now has the street creds and American Exceptionalism Success Story that allows we, the paying audience, to demand basic minimum standards for POC sitcoms. In order to find these basic minimum standards, Go back, find and watch: Julia, Roc, The Dave Chappelle Show, The Flip Wilson Show, The Jeffersons, anything that Dick Gregory wrote and presented or performed, and The Cosby Show. Collectively, They are THE MINIMUM GUIDE TO Black sitcom writing. Feel free to add or subtract to this shortlist. "We" have always known how to produce quality content. Fantasy with no basis in lived reality or representing no fantasy that any sane person of any color would actually want to imagine (except for morbid curiosity and or humor) must no longer be green-lighted. And therein, I submit, lies the MAJOR PET PEEVE we should always have when lazy intellects with financial backing throw together stereotypes to create pay-per-view or free content. Not every idea that may be highly valued by some individual mind is appropriate for massive open online entertainment portals.

I'm willing to bet they did no POC audience testing with the POC their advertisers are trying to reach. If I became aware of a mother sending an underage black male to purchase cigarettes and or alcohol* that they cannot legally consume in the 20th or 21st Centuries, they deserve to have the minors removed from the household, ASAP! No one reading this article can show me how that* is NOT putting a child POC directly in harms way and accidental death at the hands and or knees of law enforcement. Furthermore, I do not care if you can " see it on any TV and every broadcast news media outlet" -- a teenagers' co-ed party featuring pole dancing is unsafe, exploitative and abusive for all teenagers. By the way, it is also way too triggering for adults who allegedly need to be watching and discussing any of the current batch of episodes with all school-aged children. If the idle mind is supposed to be a muse for the massive production of evil, The 2021 "Upshaws" is equivalent to "Detroit when American Cars reigned supreme".

Finally, I know for a fact that raising black children to be given everything they say they want, like too many of their peers of any color, is a recipe for disaster that never ends well. ( Warning ⚠️ this next statement is harsh, on purpose.) Ask Ennis Cosby’s surviving parents, or not. At least you can still choose who to ask about what you watch as a family without having buried any of your own children. Or, ask any POC AND OR non-POC parent, grandparent, or great grandparent. If yours are unavailable, go to any church and find some to ask.

While I am on that topic, in the highly likely event that "The Upshaws" showrunners never see this article, I would always have elders preview anything I would want my children and or students to watch. The life you save might just be the life of someone you know and love.
