“Does anyone have suggestions on the best way to learn a foreign language BESIDES living there. Live class, web learning?”

VNS Answers:

Because there was an immediate need for me to be fluent in the home language(S) of my students’ families when LAUSD went to remote instruction in April 2020, Google Translate was a LIFESAVER. Thankfully, Administration concurred. I translated written communication into languages spoken in various students’ homes. BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY — parents were able to speak and write to me in their ‘home’ language. As a result 100% of my students made the transition from brick-and-mortar to the virtual classroom. Conversely, many of my colleagues had only one or two students consistently through the 2020 campus lockdown.

Also effective is. to purchase the conversational tutoring services of a friend who is fluent and. who speaks daily the language you wish to learn. Yes, I did that for a special work project, too ( parent teacher conferences requiring a District employee).

In another case, I was hired by a South Korean immigrant whose employer required 100% fluency in English and Korean. I learned SO much more about Korean history and culture —and developed a ‘new’ product for potential clients at the same time. Hope some of this helps! Now 64, I still LOVE MY WORK-LIFE AS A TEACHER most of all!
