Thoroughly Thriving Thursday 12.3.2020! Not just ANY OLD NATIONAL DAY OF REMEMBRANCE
Today is Touchstone Thursday! This DFW Mass Choir cover connects me daily with the message " They will know we are Christians by our love". In my adolescence, in the summer of my 14th year, it was my first direct encounter with angry white men, specifically a young white 14-year-old from Vermont whose M.O. was cussing 24/7 to 1.) bully, terrorize, and intimidate all the rest of the male campers, 2.) send attracting " cool- James Dean " bad boy" pheromones to all the female campers, and 3.) command the constant negative and positive attention of all the camp administrative and counseling staff. My introduction to what would be my beginnings as a servant-leader in the White Man's Belly of the Beast, overseeing the development of the Peacekeepers Intercontinental Ballistic Missile for USAF/ BMO/ NAFB, San Bernardino, CA was 8 years away. Yes, my parents ernest desire to give me taste of what adult life as a Black man might be like only made me realize how much I loathed and despised the long horrible, terrible, very , bad days and nights of....wait for it... adolescence. I was going to have a dual- track career in Industrial Engineering and Teaching, courtesy of Northwestern University. I could hardly wait to get safely past adolescence, past the trivial and cruel cliques, immaturity, stupidity, and raging hormones/ flashes of intellectual brilliance of my peers. Independent living as a single adult was in my light at the end of the tunnel. How much AND how little things have changed/ not changed 61 years later in the country of my birth, the only HOME I have ever really known, these United States of America as of Thursday, December 3 2020 at 6:47 am PT.
America, my country, my people - we will endure our nation's messy/ painful/annoying adolescence! The center, which was never the creation of any one narcissistic human being, will hold. Learning to love ourselves is yet and still the greatest love of all. With that, a new day is beginning.
